Zach Cregger, director of the recent Resident Evil adaptation, indicated during an interview with Polygon that a sequel is already under consideration. The film, released in September 2026, follows a medical courier portrayed by Austin Abrams as he navigates a zombie-infested Raccoon City. Early box office data from Deadline suggests the movie is on track for a domestic opening weekend between $35 million and $50 million, surpassing the $41.9 million worldwide gross of the 2021 predecessor, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Cregger initially approached the project as a one-off collaboration with Capcom's franchise but said he now has additional ideas for expanding the story. He noted that while his next film, an original sci-fi project titled The Flood slated for an August 11, 2028 release via Amblin Entertainment, remains his immediate focus, the possibility of returning to the Resident Evil universe cannot be ruled out. The director emphasized that any future installment would depend on how the current film is received and the trajectory of his upcoming work.
