Microsoft is removing several Copilot shortcuts from the OneDrive right-click context menu in File Explorer, with changes rolling out between mid-November and early December. The actions being eliminated include options to summarize documents, generate FAQs, compare files and images, explain images, extract text, and ask questions about files. The 'Ask Copilot' shortcut itself will remain available.
The move follows a September 2025 announcement in which Microsoft described bringing AI capabilities directly into file management. A company statement noted that simplifying Copilot interactions would reduce menu clutter, stating: "We're simplifying how people use Copilot with their OneDrive files in File Explorer."
Users can still access Copilot through the right-click menu or via the Copilot icon in the File Explorer Home pane. Additional access points remain in the OneDrive activity center. Microsoft has indicated plans to reduce redundant AI entry points across its product suite, with Windows lead Pavan Davuluri noting in March 2026 that the company aims to eliminate "unnecessary Copilot entry points."
The context menu overhaul is part of broader efforts to streamline File Explorer, which Microsoft describes as becoming "less cluttered and sluggish." The changes reflect an attempt to restructure the interface toward a model more akin to Windows 10's design, though the company has not specified a timeline for additional modifications.
