Zodl has launched a waitlist for its macOS Vault application, planning to grant beta access in batches of 100 users. The product aims to enable long-term self-custody of shielded Zcash (ZEC). Beta enrollment began with groups of 100 people, and an earlier update had recorded over 4,100 signups. The official waitlist page does not specify a public launch date or detailed criteria for selecting testers. Prospective participants can register using an email address and will receive access through a staged rollout, as stated on the signup page. ZecHub mentioned in its October 14 newsletter that Vault is a desktop application for long-term self-custody of shielded ZEC, introduced on October 7, and linked the announcement to Zodl’s official account. The October 18 ZecHub ecosystem digest referenced the Zodl update and the 4,100 signups, noting these were registrations reported prior to the digest rather than current active users. The waitlist page indicates each admission batch contains 100 users but does not clarify how many batches will be released or when full access will begin. Zodl’s macOS listing does not confirm plans for versions on other operating systems. The October 14 ZecHub description referred to invitations being issued in batches, and the signup page explains how access will be granted without confirming the number of invitations already sent. Zodl’s mobile wallet previously supported hardware signing, allowing users to connect a Keystone device and manage funds through the app, with transaction approvals handled on the hardware. The mobile app accepts transparent ZEC and prompts users to shield incoming balances, after which funds can be used for private payments. For cross-chain transfers, Zodl describes CrossPay as a method to send shielded ZEC while recipients may receive other assets such as Bitcoin or stablecoins. Swaps between ZEC and other supported cryptocurrencies use NEAR Intents. These features apply to the existing mobile application. The Vault registration page does not currently list payment, swap, or hardware-signing capabilities. On February 17, crypto.news reported that Zodl rebranded its Zashi wallet after leaving Electric Coin Company; the February 16 statement indicated the name change would occur via an app update without altering wallet functionality, security, or user data. According to Zcash Stats, shielded pool balances reached 4.96 million ZEC on October 18, up from 4.91 million ZEC 28 days earlier. The proportion of shielded coins in circulation was approximately 29.2%. These figures reflect network-level data and do not identify individual holders or transaction amounts. Developer Adam Tucker, in an October 19 account of a privacy proposal by Zakura, highlighted risks of exposing swap addresses on NEAR’s public blockchain, noting that future quantum computers could potentially recover viewing keys and reveal payment histories. His suggested design would limit exposure to a single swap while preserving the existing spending key. Zakura indicated that software wallets using its libraries might integrate this feature in the coming weeks, with hardware wallet support to follow later.
