The release of Steins;Gate Reboot marks the first major overhaul of the 2009 time-traveling adventure that helped define the visual novel genre. Producer Tatsuya Matsubara and scenario writer Naotaka Hayashi explained the project's purpose during a recent interview. Their goal was to rebuild the game using modern technology while preserving its core narrative for both new players and longtime fans.

The remake reconstructs every visual and textual element from the ground up. Matsubara noted that the original version's assets were outdated for contemporary platforms, necessitating a complete recreation. The team also integrated scenes exclusive to the anime adaptation and the ELITE version, which were absent from the original game. These additions include a late-night park conversation with Kurisu, a laundromat sequence, and a rooftop lab scene, all adapted to fit the text-adventure format.

Hayashi emphasized that Reboot returns to the traditional text-adventure structure, unlike ELITE's simultaneous anime-text progression. This shift required supplementing certain narrative gaps with newly written content while restoring passages from the original 2009 release. The writers also incorporated evolving character speech patterns observed over the franchise's 17-year history through spin-offs and adaptations.

A key innovation is the inclusion of a new ending centered on Moeka, originally conceived as a standalone drama CD titled Hyde of the Dark Dimension. Hayashi revealed that player demand for a Moeka-focused conclusion prompted the CD's creation in 2010. For Reboot, this story was recontextualized to branch from Chapter 9's conclusion, omitting Suzuha's appearance to preserve narrative impact in later chapters. The decision reflected careful consideration of the series' worldline structure.

The new ending's trigger involves a D-Mail sent by a future version of Nae, though its exact contents remain intentionally ambiguous. Matsubara described the message as "something that would affect the Y2K problem," while Hayashi explained that revealing specifics would disrupt pacing and diminish the player's experience of Okabe's disorientation when encountering the Gamma Attractor Field. The writers prioritized emotional resonance over explicit details.

When asked about potential adaptations of other Steins;Gate media, including the anime's epilogue or the film Load Region of Déjà Vu, Hayashi confirmed no current plans exist. The team also dismissed the possibility of a "harem ending" due to its incompatibility with the work's established tone. Instead, they expressed interest in revisiting Chaos;Head with modern graphical capabilities, though no concrete projects are underway.

The project's development involved revisiting long-standing narrative elements while respecting the franchise's evolution. Hayashi highlighted the enduring appeal of early Alpha Worldline scenes featuring the Lab Members' casual interactions, describing their dialogue as "so much fun to write." The team continues to explore theoretical worldlines like the Chi attractor field, which Hayashi described as "one possibility" within a specific scenario rather than a canonical element.

Matsubara indicated that Chaos;Head would be the next logical candidate for a Reboot treatment, citing modern technology's potential to deepen its storytelling capabilities. Both creators emphasized that any future adaptations would aim to enhance rather than alter the original works' fundamental narratives.
