Sony says it will not absorb significant hardware losses for the upcoming PS6, a console expected to cost $1,000 or more at launch. During a Q&A at Sony's Game & Network Services division, SIE president Hideaki Nishino said the company cannot absorb all component cost increases and has already raised prices outside Japan. PlayStation sales fell 58% year‑on‑year in May, the largest decline in 26 years, while Xbox recorded its lowest performance since 2001. Nishino added that sales are proceeding as planned and that demand has not declined. He said Sony does not intend to sell hardware at significant losses and is carefully monitoring market conditions. Analysts note that memory chip shortages and rising component costs have complicated PS6 development, leading some to expect a launch toward the end of the decade. Sony previously increased PS5 pricing and has not yet set a launch date or price for PS6. Microsoft also faces higher console costs and has not ruled out another Xbox price increase in 2027. Sony maintains its projections for PS6 remain unchanged despite the current pricing environment.
