Anthropic is in discussions with Samsung to develop a custom AI chip, according to a report. In April, Reuters reported that the company was considering producing its own chips to mitigate shortages. The Information later said the two firms are exploring a collaboration, though Anthropic has not decided the chip’s purpose, integration or performance level. Anthropic said its hardware strategy will continue to rely on chips from Google, Amazon and Nvidia. The company declined to comment further on the Samsung talks. Several AI firms are pursuing custom silicon to differentiate their compute capabilities and reduce dependence on Nvidia. OpenAI recently announced a partnership with Broadcom to create an inference processor called Jalapeño, which it claims improves performance per watt. Amazon and Google also offer custom TPUs through their cloud services. Samsung manufactures chips for Nvidia and uses Nvidia software in its own production processes, and the companies are building an AI chip factory in South Korea. Samsung has also discussed potential collaborations with Google on chip manufacturing. The partnership remains undisclosed, and no timeline for a custom chip has been set.
