Supreme Court Decision Allows End of Haitian TPS Raising Caregiving Concerns

The U.S. Supreme Court decision permits the Trump administration to terminate Temporary Protected Status for Haitian nationals, affecting roughly 330,000 individuals whose work authorizations expire on July 10. TPS, which grants temporary residence to people from countries experiencing crises, had been renewed under previous administrations, making the protections effectively permanent until the recent ruling. Republican Representative Mike Lawler said ending TPS would create a crisis in hospitals, nursing homes and the intellectual disabilities community because about one‑third of Haitian TPS holders work in healthcare. Democratic Representative Ayanna Pressley warned that seniors could lose caregivers amid an existing shortage. Data show that of the 330,000 Haitian TPS holders, approximately 13,000 work daily as nursing assistants caring for 65,000 patients, and another 8,000 provide care to 12,000 children and elderly individuals, according to studies by The Boston Globe and Americans for Immigrant Justice. Harvard Medical School professor David Grabowski noted the decision would affect nursing homes, assisted‑living facilities and home‑care agencies. Researchers say Haitian TPS recipients represent 15 percent of noncitizen healthcare workers and make up 2.1 percent of the total immigrant population. The aging U.S. population is projected to rise from 58 million to 82 million by 2050, increasing demand for long‑term care. Nursing home admissions are already limited by staffing shortages, with 19 percent of facilities meeting federal staffing minimums. KFF director Drishti Pillai said the long‑term care industry already faces shortages, and the removal of Haitian workers would exacerbate the problem. City University of New York professor Steffie Woolhandler said the shortage of direct‑care workers is longstanding, and deportation would worsen it. The majority of Haitian TPS holders reside in Florida, especially South Florida, which has the largest Haitian TPS population in the nation, with about 158,000 individuals. The ruling also extends to Syrian and Venezuelan TPS holders.
