The studio created a revised cut with the assistance of writer Jeremy Slater, while Gillespie's version was reported to be about 11 minutes longer and to emphasize antagonist Krem. After comparing the two versions, DC Studios selected its own cut, which outperformed Gillespie's version by two points, and the film was sent to theaters in late June. Sources said that testing two competing cuts is uncommon, and studios that invest in such testing do so because they feel strongly about certain elements. Online discussions have referenced the soundtrack, including a cover of Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle" that generated criticism, and a February screening featured Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" instead. A report suggested the film could result in losses exceeding $100 million, according to a recent analysis.
