Grand Theft Auto Has Faced Multiple Controversies over Violence and Sexual Content

54d ago · Source: ign

Grand Theft Auto, a series of video games published by Rockstar Games, has been the subject of recurring controversies concerning its depiction of violence and sexual content.

In 1997, the release of the top‑down game sparked criticism from politicians such as Lord Campbell of Croy, who warned that the game could influence impressionable youth, and from tabloids such as the Daily Mail, which ran headlines describing the title as glorifying crime.

In 2005, a hidden sexual content minigame labeled “Hot Coffee” was discovered in GTA: San Andreas; the ESRB announced an investigation into the rating process, major retailers including Walmart and Target halted sales, and a congressional resolution called for an FTC investigation. The FTC said Take‑Two Interactive was deceptive in its marketing but issued only a warning, and a class‑action lawsuit settled for $20 million.

GTA IV faced criticism from Mothers Against Drunk Driving, which petitioned the ESRB to assign an adults‑only rating after noting that the game allowed a character to drive while intoxicated, and from advocacy groups concerned about explicit nudity in the “Lost and the Damned” expansion. Attorney Jack Thompson, who had previously sued Take‑Two over claims that GTA inspired real‑world violence, filed a complaint alleging that the company used his likeness without permission; the parties settled, with Thompson agreeing not to pursue future lawsuits against Take‑Two’s titles.

In 2014, actress Lindsay Lohan filed a lawsuit claiming that GTA V used her likeness for a marketing character; the court found that the game’s parody of public figures is protected by the First Amendment and dismissed the claim.

The series has remained commercially successful, with each new installment generating billions in revenue and maintaining a prominent place in popular culture.

Analysts note that the series’ longevity reflects its ability to provoke debate while continuing to push the boundaries of interactive entertainment.

Creative Differences Reported between DC Studios and Director Craig Gillespie Over Supergirl

54d ago · Source: ign

DC Studios and director Craig Gillespie reportedly tested two versions of the Supergirl film before its June 26 theatrical release. Behind‑the‑scenes reporting by The Hollywood Reporter indicated that the crew debated which direction to take for Milly Alcock's standalone debut. Multiple test screenings held in December 2025, February 2026 and March 2026 produced scores in the low 70s, according to the same source. The studio created a revised cut with the assistance of writer Jeremy Slater, while Gillespie's version was reported to be about 11 minutes longer and to emphasize antagonist Krem. After comparing the two versions, DC Studios selected its own cut, which outperformed Gillespie's version by two points, and the film was sent to theaters in late June. Sources said that testing two competing cuts is uncommon, and studios that invest in such testing do so because they feel strongly about certain elements. Online discussions have referenced the soundtrack, including a cover of Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle" that generated criticism, and a February screening featured Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" instead. A report suggested the film could result in losses exceeding $100 million, according to a recent analysis. IGN assigned a 6 out of 10 rating, noting that Alcock's performance was strong but that the film relied on elements from other movies. The DC Universe is scheduled to release Clayface on October 23, 2026, and Superman: Man of Tomorrow on July 9, 2027. Marvel Rivals Releases Captain America Swimsuit Skin

NetEase Games released a Captain America swimsuit skin called "Seaside Sentinel" in Marvel Rivals on July 1, 2026 as part of a 4th of July promotion.

The game features a roster of Marvel characters and has introduced several swimsuit-themed cosmetics for heroes such as Loki and White Fox, following previous releases for Daredevil and Black Widow.

An official description from Marvel Rivals states that the beach crew voted Captain America to man the grill, though his grilling skills were described as less calculated than his shield throws.

IGN confirmed that the skin and its contents are official and purchasable.

The release expands the game's cosmetic offerings and the game remains available on PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Scuf Instinct Pro Review: Five-Year Assessment of Xbox Controller

Scuf Instinct Pro Review: Five-Year Assessment of Xbox Controller

Freelance journalist Reece Bithrey reviewed the Scuf Instinct Pro, a controller released in 2021, after five years of continuous use. The article noted that the controller remains included in IGN’s best‑controller list and holds a 9/10 rating for competitive gaming.

The Instinct Pro was introduced when Microsoft’s Elite Series 2 was the primary premium option. It features a weighted chassis, customizable paddle switches, and a textured finish. Build quality was described as strong, with short‑travel ABXY buttons and rear paddles that provide a distinct click.

During extended use across racing, open‑world, and sports titles, the original thumbsticks exhibited minimal wear, and the paddle mechanism responded quickly without feeling mushy. Battery life was specified at up to 30 hours, though the reviewer charged the unit via a third‑party dock rather than a direct dock connection.

The controller is currently listed at approximately £163.90 for a used blue model, a price higher than many recent controllers but lower than Scuf’s Valor Pro. It lacks a 2.4 GHz high‑frequency wireless connection, but maintains stable Bluetooth and Xbox Wireless performance on Xbox and PC.

Overall, the review concluded that the Instinct Pro remains a reliable choice despite the availability of newer controllers with Hall‑effect thumbsticks and faster wireless standards.

People Worry About Viewing The Odyssey in Formats Other Than Imax

54d ago · Source: ign

The Odyssey, the first film shot entirely on IMAX cameras, will open in cinemas on July 17, and viewers have expressed concerns that alternative formats may display only part of the intended image. The film will be available in several formats, including 70mm IMAX, standard IMAX, 35mm, Dolby Vision and other digital presentations. While 70mm IMAX (aspect ratio 1:43:1) shows the full frame, only about 30 theaters worldwide can project it, meaning most audiences will see the film at 1:90:1 or other ratios such as 2:20:1 or 2:39:1, resulting in reduced vertical portion of the picture. Director Christopher Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema said the central portion of the frame contains the primary action, so the story remains intact across formats. Social media users have debated the issue, noting the differing aspect ratios and the cost and complexity of IMAX projection. Viewers can expect a strong visual experience on standard screens, though the full intended composition is only guaranteed in the rare 70mm IMAX presentations.

Nintendo President Says The Pokémon Company Will Take Measures to Address Card Scalping

54d ago · Source: ign

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the company is taking measures to address widespread scalping of Pokémon trading cards after reports of product shortages and thefts.

The Pokémon Company has produced 85 billion cards to date, with 10 billion manufactured in 2025 alone, a figure that exceeds the world’s population yet still falls short of demand.

Production has risen in recent years, with 43 billion cards printed between October 1996 and March 2022 and an equivalent amount released in the past four years.

Upcoming plans include a 30th‑anniversary set scheduled for September, which may further increase demand.

Furukawa made the remarks at a recent shareholder annual general meeting, stating that Nintendo and The Pokémon Company are aware of instances where limited‑quantity cards are purchased in large volumes and resold at higher prices.

He said the companies are responding with made‑to‑order sales, agreements with marketplace operators, and an account‑verification system that uses Japan’s My Number Card for online priority drawings.

Incidents of scalping‑related crime have been reported, including overnight break‑ins at trading card stores, an armed robbery at a New York shop that left staff and customers held at gunpoint, and the arrest of a Florida man suspected of stealing $12,000 worth of cards with a battery‑powered chainsaw, as well as a Pasadena man arrested after hiding in a closed Best Buy before a card drop.

The company added that it will continue to discuss appropriate delivery methods with The Pokémon Company as needed.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale Reportedly Cast in Heat 2, Filming Planned for November 2026

54d ago · Source: ign

Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale are reported to have been cast in Heat 2, with filming planned to start in November 2026, according to TheWrap. TheWrap said that the actors finalized agreements after a year of negotiations, though a representative for Amazon MGM told the site that deals have not been finalized. The original 1995 Heat featured Al Pacino as Vincent Hanna and Val Kilmer as Chris Shiherlis; DiCaprio and Bale would replace those roles. The film is intended as a prequel‑sequel that will explore events before and after the 1995 story, a concept Mann outlined in 2016 and expanded in a novel released in 2022. Director Michael Mann said in 2023 that the project is his next film after shooting Ferrari, which he described as having done well. Adam Driver is reported to be in negotiations to portray villain Otis Wardell, and Stephen Graham is said to be discussing the role of Neil McCauley previously played by Robert De Niro. Various actresses are reportedly being considered for the role of Charlene Shiherlis, and Deadline indicated in May that Jason Clarke may be cast in an unspecified part. No official release date has been announced, and production timelines remain uncertain. Filming is expected to commence in November, but the project has not set a release date, and further details may emerge as negotiations continue.

Sony Announces Digital‑Only PlayStation Games Starting 2028

54d ago · Source: ign

On July 1, Sony announced that no new PlayStation titles will be released on physical disc after January 2028, shifting the platform to a digital‑only model.

Developers and fans in Japan have voiced concern that the change could limit preservation of games and reduce sales for second‑hand retailers.

Hideo Kojima, the creator of the Death Stranding series, reposted his 2021 comments warning that digital data can become inaccessible if services are discontinued, noting that access may be cut off by major events or policy shifts.

Masami Yamamoto of Shueisha Games said the absence of a disc version could add about one and a half months to the polishing phase, as developers would need to finalize the master without the need to produce a physical copy.

Voice actor Masaru Yoshimura expressed disappointment, saying he prefers browsing physical cases and finds the move sad.

Sony noted that 78 % of game sales in 2025 were downloads, indicating a broader consumer trend toward digital media.

The announcement coincided with Sony’s plan to shut down online services for the PS3 and PS Vita and to delete over 550 purchased movies without refund, raising questions about the durability of digital purchases.

Industry analysts said the timing may have amplified consumer anxiety, especially after the removal of physical media options.

While some observers point out that physical releases have been declining for years, Sony said it is adapting to consumer preferences and has begun reallocating disc production staff to other areas of the business.

The company has not indicated any intention to reverse the policy, and upcoming consoles, including Project Helix, are expected to launch without disc drives.

An IGN poll found that 90 % of readers oppose an all‑digital future, but Sony has signaled that the shift will continue.
