On July 1, Sony announced that no new PlayStation titles will be released on physical disc after January 2028, shifting the platform to a digital‑only model.

Developers and fans in Japan have voiced concern that the change could limit preservation of games and reduce sales for second‑hand retailers.

Hideo Kojima, the creator of the Death Stranding series, reposted his 2021 comments warning that digital data can become inaccessible if services are discontinued, noting that access may be cut off by major events or policy shifts.

Masami Yamamoto of Shueisha Games said the absence of a disc version could add about one and a half months to the polishing phase, as developers would need to finalize the master without the need to produce a physical copy.

Voice actor Masaru Yoshimura expressed disappointment, saying he prefers browsing physical cases and finds the move sad.

Sony noted that 78 % of game sales in 2025 were downloads, indicating a broader consumer trend toward digital media.

The announcement coincided with Sony’s plan to shut down online services for the PS3 and PS Vita and to delete over 550 purchased movies without refund, raising questions about the durability of digital purchases.

Industry analysts said the timing may have amplified consumer anxiety, especially after the removal of physical media options.

While some observers point out that physical releases have been declining for years, Sony said it is adapting to consumer preferences and has begun reallocating disc production staff to other areas of the business.

The company has not indicated any intention to reverse the policy, and upcoming consoles, including Project Helix, are expected to launch without disc drives.

An IGN poll found that 90 % of readers oppose an all‑digital future, but Sony has signaled that the shift will continue.
