The Odyssey, the first film shot entirely on IMAX cameras, will open in cinemas on July 17, and viewers have expressed concerns that alternative formats may display only part of the intended image. The film will be available in several formats, including 70mm IMAX, standard IMAX, 35mm, Dolby Vision and other digital presentations. While 70mm IMAX (aspect ratio 1:43:1) shows the full frame, only about 30 theaters worldwide can project it, meaning most audiences will see the film at 1:90:1 or other ratios such as 2:20:1 or 2:39:1, resulting in reduced vertical portion of the picture. Director Christopher Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema said the central portion of the frame contains the primary action, so the story remains intact across formats. Social media users have debated the issue, noting the differing aspect ratios and the cost and complexity of IMAX projection. Viewers can expect a strong visual experience on standard screens, though the full intended composition is only guaranteed in the rare 70mm IMAX presentations.
