The milestone reflects a resurgence driven by the upcoming second season of Edgerunners and recent updates. Launched in 2020, the game initially sold more than 13 million copies within the first two weeks but saw sales decline after launch issues, prompting CD Projekt Red to pause public updates for a period. By late 2022 the total reached 20 million, and the recent figure doubles that number. The company attributes the increase to next‑gen console versions, multiple free patches, downloadable content, and ongoing discount promotions. A small content update is expected with the release of Edgerunners Season 2, similar to the 1.6 patch released after the first season. CD Projekt Red indicated that major updates are currently on hold.
