Axel Rydby, a director on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, said the game’s development shifted from game design to following monetisation spreadsheets.
Rocksteady, the studio behind the Batman Arkham series, moved to a live‑service multiplayer model after years of development and multiple delays; the game launched in 2024 and resulted in a reported $200 million loss for Warner Bros. Games, leading the studio to abandon the project.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Rydby explained that executives increasingly prioritized recouping investment over improving gameplay, noting that the shift began around 2022 and continued through the game’s delayed release. He said he felt he was no longer making games but was following a spreadsheet that was not clearly presented to the team. Rydby left Rocksteady in 2024 and founded an independent studio developing a new title called Secret of Circadia.
Rocksteady has not announced its next project, though industry speculation suggests a return to a single‑player Batman game may be in development.
