Summer of Ludd Festival Teaches Offline Living in New York City. The week‑long event took place in Tompkins Square Park and ran from July 1 to July 5. Organizers, operating under the name Gowanus, described the gathering as a loose coalition seeking to reduce reliance on digital platforms. The program included a play about the historical Luddite movement, workshops on mending and analog communication, a shortwave radio and walkie‑talkie session, and a discussion on locating events without social media. A 2024 Pew Research study found that 48 percent of teen respondents viewed social media negatively, up from 32 percent in 2022. Attendees comprised students, Pride participants, families and former technology employees. While participants expressed hope that the experience could encourage reduced technology use, Andrew Maynard, a professor at Arizona State University, said the movement may have limited effect on overall digital habits.
