Linux Mint’s next release, scheduled for December 2026, will make Cinnamon 6.8 fully supported on Wayland while continuing to support X11.

The current Linux Mint 22.3 release ships with Cinnamon 6.6.4, and the development branch is at 6.7.4, indicating that the upcoming version will include Cinnamon 6.8. Lead developer Clement Lefebvre announced this plan in the Linux Mint blog posted in June 2026, stating that both Wayland and X11 will be fully supported in the new version.

The blog noted ongoing challenges with Wayland, including issues surrounding window size and positioning, updating icons with progress bars, and creating screensaver support. Earlier posts in February and May detailed these problems and presented performance measurements that showed varying effects of different settings on dialog boxes and screenshot tools.

Despite the development effort, the team emphasized that the functionality of the Cinnamon desktop will not be reduced, and X11 will remain a supported display server.

The release timeline is subject to change, and the final date could be adjusted as the project continues its work on Wayland support.
