China recovered its first orbital‑class rocket booster on Friday after a launch from the Wenchang Commercial Space Launch Site on Hainan Island. The Long March 10B rocket lifted off at 12:15 am EDT (04:15 UTC) and carried a payload designated CX‑26. About ten minutes after liftoff, the booster guided itself to a floating platform where a net system captured it as its engines shut down. The upper stage placed the payload into low‑Earth orbit.
Chinese officials said the mission was successful and that it validated key technologies such as multiple engine restarts, high‑precision navigation, and the net capture system. Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, posted on X that the flight marked a significant event in China’s space program and represented the first controlled recovery of a Long March rocket stage.
The booster, 16 feet in diameter and roughly 209 feet tall, used seven kerosene‑fuelled engines. After separating from the upper stage, it descended to a four‑legged frame on an offshore vessel and was captured by tensioned cables, reducing the need for landing legs and limiting fuel consumption during descent.
SpaceX recovered its Falcon 9 booster in 2015 and captured its Starship booster in 2024, while Blue Origin landed its New Glenn booster on a platform in November 2025. The Long March 10B’s sea‑based net approach differs from the propulsive landings used by SpaceX and Blue Origin.
The test flight was the first of the Long March 10B, which has a payload capacity of about 16 metric tons to low‑Earth orbit, slightly less than SpaceX’s Falcon 9. CASC said the reusable‑stage test is expected to be completed by the end of the year and that the technology will support future missions, including the Long March 10, which will use three reusable first stages for lunar landings targeted for 2030.
Other Chinese companies, including LandSpace and CAS Space, are also pursuing reusable rocket concepts, though their initial attempts have not yet succeeded. In the United States, SpaceX, Blue Origin, Rocket Lab, Relativity Space and other firms are developing partially or fully reusable launch vehicles.
The successful recovery places China among the few nations with demonstrated capability to reuse orbital‑class rocket stages and may increase its launch frequency, though the timing of subsequent flights and operational impact remain to be seen.
