Vertigo Studios, known for Metro Awakening, shut down last month after completing development on an unannounced VR Tomb Raider title that began in 2024.

The VR market, which includes devices such as the Meta Quest 3, PlayStation VR2 and PC VR headsets, has struggled to achieve widespread adoption among AAA game developers.

According to MP1st, the project employed Unreal Engine 5 and featured gameplay elements such as climbing, zip‑lining, swimming, environmental puzzles and combat against enemies including shielded skeletons, bats, scorpions, hyenas and a giant guardian statue. The studio also provided concept art, video footage and approximately 20 minutes of early development gameplay, the report said. No official announcement was issued before the studio’s closure.

The cancellation underscores the ongoing difficulty of adapting established franchises to virtual reality as the sector seeks broader consumer acceptance.
