Apple iOS 27 introduces Gymkit support for iPhone and AirPods Pro 3, enabling treadmill workout tracking without an Apple Watch. Gymkit, launched in 2017 for Apple Watch, lets the watch communicate with compatible gym equipment to share heart rate and receive metrics such as distance, incline, pace and calories. In iOS 27, users tap the iPhone to a Gymkit‑compatible treadmill, select Indoor Walk or Indoor Run, and start the session on the machine. The iPhone receives treadmill data while AirPods Pro 3 provide heart‑rate information. Workout data is stored on the iPhone and deleted from the equipment after the session. If the iPhone is used without AirPods, the connection drops because heart‑rate data is required. Starting a workout from the iPhone while wearing an Apple Watch redirects to the Watch app. In tests with iOS 27 beta 1, the iPhone recorded a 16‑minute treadmill walk covering 0.66 miles, 65 active calories, 97 total calories, 32 feet of elevation gain and an average heart rate of 115 bpm, matching results from an Apple Watch. The feature serves as a backup when the watch is unavailable and offers iPhone and AirPods users a glimpse of the Apple Watch fitness experience, supporting Apple’s broader health and fitness strategy.
