The study, published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, examined the composition of the radula, a tongue‑like structure used by limpets to scrape rocks for food. The teeth consist of nanofibers of the mineral goethite embedded in a protein matrix, yielding a tensile strength about five times that of typical spider silk. Lead researcher Asa Barber of the University of Portsmouth noted that the material can withstand pressures comparable to a strand of spaghetti supporting thousands of one‑pound bags of sugar. While the material does not exceed human‑made substances such as graphene, it outperforms Kevlar and aligns with high‑quality carbon fibers. Researchers suggest the findings could inform the development of new engineered materials for structural and mechanical applications.
