Apple and the U.S. Department of Justice are in discussions to settle an antitrust lawsuit filed in 2024 that alleges the company maintains a smartphone monopoly. The suit claims the monopoly affects five aspects of the iPhone experience, including super apps, cloud gaming, third‑party messaging, smartwatches and digital wallets. Bloomberg reported that Apple has made multiple settlement offers this year, though the negotiations remain private and no agreement is guaranteed. The department under the Trump administration has prioritized settlement to reduce litigation costs and provide quicker consumer relief, according to Stanley Woodward, the agency’s antitrust deputy. Apple filed a joint status report with the DOJ and recently won a discovery dispute over access to federal agency documents. The company has implemented several changes in the past year, such as adding RCS support to the Messages app, launching a Mini Apps Partner Program and expanding NFC access. Whether these measures satisfy the agency’s concerns is still unknown. The talks could have implications for Apple’s upcoming leadership transition in September.
