Experimental Social Scene is developing Strandfall, a physical orienteering live action role‑playing game scheduled for September in a park in Edinburgh. The event will involve 30 participants who will use custom McNair‑Feldman Devices to locate missing scientists, forecast storms, and operate a long‑range mesh radio network over three hours. The devices are 3D‑printed enclosures that house a low‑power radio, GPS, accelerometer, compass and a small e‑paper display, and are intended to function as scientific instruments rather than consumer smartphones. Organizers say the hardware enables gameplay that would be difficult to simulate manually. Players will coordinate tasks, relay information, and may pursue storm “chasing” while others map exclusion zones. While smartphones could be used, organizers note that their typical functions conflict with the immersive, face‑to‑face nature of the experience. The event is low‑tech, not no‑tech, and will include maps, thermal printers, and role‑play elements. Veteran Nordic LARP designer Juhana Pettersson is consulted for design guidance. Strandfall is site‑responsive and can be adapted to other locations. Participation is free; details are available on the project website.
