ZA/UM, a UK‑based video game studio, announced on July 17 that it is eliminating up to 32 positions across all departments. The layoffs follow the May 21 release of Zero Parades: For Dead Spies, which received critical acclaim but has not met the studio's financial expectations. In a statement posted to X, the company said the reductions would allow it to consult and work with the Workers' Alliance union while emphasizing that its artistic standards remain unchanged. The studio, known for the 2019 Game Awards‑winning title Disco Elysium, reported earlier controversies involving former developers, including a 2022 departure of several key staff and subsequent legal disputes. In 2024, a previous round of layoffs affected about 24 employees and led to the cancellation of a planned Disco Elysium expansion. Zero Parades achieved an 83 Metacritic score after its launch on PC and PS5. The company indicated that the restructuring will alter the organization's shape but not its purpose.
