Israeli settlers set fire to two mosques, vehicles and agricultural land in the West Bank, Palestinian officials said, following a clash near the village of Tal that left four Palestinians and two Israelis dead. The confrontation has intensified a pattern of violence by settlers in the West Bank, where the Israeli military has conducted raids and arrested more than 130 individuals over the weekend under a counter‑terrorism operation. The latest incidents occurred overnight in the villages of Qusra and Kour, where settlers damaged a mosque under construction and spray‑painted graffiti that included the word “revenge,” according to the mayor of Qusra, Abdul Azim Wadi. A second mosque in Kour was set ablaze and vandalized with slogans, Palestinian officials reported. Israeli troops were deployed to Qusra, and police said they would investigate the incidents and collect evidence. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to take “powerful action,” which may include the demolition of homes belonging to two Palestinians alleged to have taken part in the Tal clash. Residents described multiple attacks across the West Bank since the Tal clash, including stone‑throwing and arson. Hanan Turabi said settlers ran toward her house, threw stones and forced her family to flee after six of her buildings were torched. Kaied Ahmad Turabi, a visitor from Miami, sustained a black eye, cuts and a head wound requiring 12 stitches after confronting settlers on a neighbour’s porch. Israeli soldiers positioned themselves to separate the groups, while Palestinian demonstrators used tear gas to push back the settlers, who eventually retreated. The Israeli military said it is working to prevent “incidents of nationalist crime,” a term it uses for settler attacks, even as settlement outposts continue to expand. Human rights groups note that settlements housing about 700,000 Jews in the West Bank are considered illegal under international law, and about 3.3 million Palestinians live alongside them. The United Nations reported that 1,114 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since the October 7, 2023, Hamas‑led attacks on Israel, including at least 35 deaths linked to settler attacks, while 41 Israelis have been killed in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli operations in the West Bank. The escalation has drawn international condemnation, but no significant change in the pattern of violence has been observed.
