A 21-year-old man suspected of carrying out an Islamist terror attack at Berlin Pride was shot and killed by police on Sunday after police launched a manhunt that followed a vehicle ramming and stabbing incident in Berlin's Tiergarten park on Saturday.

The attack occurred during Christopher Street Day celebrations, a large LGBT pride event, which was disrupted, leading authorities to cancel a clean-up event and a market planned for Sunday.

One woman was killed and at least 29 people were injured.

Police opened fire when the suspect, identified as Abdul Ballout, approached officers with a knife in the Spandau borough.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said evidence indicated an Islamist terrorist motive and described the suspect as having a history of criminal offences and radicalisation.

Prosecutors said Ballout had travelled to Lebanon in May 2025 intending to join the Islamic State, made contact with individuals he believed to be IS members, was arrested in Lebanon in July 2025 for incitement, sentenced to three months, returned to Germany in November 2025, and was convicted in May of this year of preparing a serious act of violence, receiving a suspended sentence and parole supervision.

He also had prior convictions for assault, robbery and theft of headphones.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited the scene and said Germany would protect its society from terrorism, condemning extremism.

The interior ministry said authorities raised Germany's threat level and instructed other states to review security measures for major events.

The investigation remains ongoing.
