Four fires ignited by live ammunition during training at the Grafenwoehr Training Area in Bavaria burned about 340 acres over the weekend, 7th Army Training Command said.
The Grafenwoehr facility is the Army’s largest permanent training area in Europe and regularly hosts live‑fire exercises. Fires are common when hot weather dries out debris accumulated over winter and spring, officials noted.
The fires occurred simultaneously in multiple locations on Sunday, prompting helicopters from the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade to drop water using Bambi Buckets filled from local freshwater sources, according to a statement from spokeswoman Lacey Justinger. Training was halted during the incident and resumed on Monday after the blazes were extinguished Sunday evening. No injuries or damage to infrastructure were reported.
The Army has not released details regarding the cause of the ignitions beyond the use of live rounds, and it remains unclear whether additional safety measures will be implemented following the incident.
