Satellite imagery taken on November 28, 2025 shows the Bijagós Archipelago in Guinea-Bissau, where tides rise and fall twice daily through a network of sandy channels, mudflats and mangrove forests. The ebb and flow expose intertidal mudflats and sandflats, causing the visible size of the islands to expand at low tide and contract at high tide. The image, credited to NASA and Lauren Dauphin of the USGS, captures the landscape changes that occur as the water recedes and advances across the 88 islands and islets. This daily cycle illustrates the dynamic nature of the archipelago’s coastline.
