POAP, a Proof of Attendance Protocol platform, announced it will wind down after more than five years, with co‑founder Isabel Gonzalez stating the closure on Aug. 3. The service launched in 2019 and, over five years, minted roughly 7.6 million badges from more than 46,000 issuers. It entered maintenance mode on March 16, ending active development and new issuer onboarding while allowing existing integrations to continue. The company raised $10 million in 2022 and pursued fee‑based revenue for commercial issuers, partnering with firms such as Coinbase, American Express, Warner Music Group and Bayer. Existing tokens remain on public blockchains, but the gallery, APIs and metadata services may become unavailable as the supporting infrastructure is discontinued. No final shutdown timetable has been published, and the statement did not specify whether another organization will maintain the services. The closure underscores POAP’s legacy of community engagement and brand recognition, yet the future of its hosted tools and open collectibles standard remains uncertain, with additional updates expected to clarify preservation plans and possible continuation under new ownership.
