Cloudflare announced Kitesurf, a lightweight browser that runs on Cloudflare Workers and is available in beta through the Browser Run platform. The browser targets AI agents that require a headless browsing environment with lower CPU and memory usage than traditional browsers such as Chromium.

Development began after advancements in Cloudflare’s Developer Platform and increasing demand for browsers suited to agentic workloads. Kitesurf uses a single SandboxOutbound worker to fetch resources and enforce network policies, while the Engine component provides CDP WebSocket and REST APIs and manages session state. PageScript isolates, created with Dynamic Workers, handle page parsing and script execution using Rust libraries such as Blitz and Stylo. PageRenderer generates image buffers via RPC and returns them to the Engine for display.

The design focuses on isolation and statelessness: each session runs in a disposable isolate with limited resources, and components communicate through Cloudflare’s built‑in RPC system. Kitesurf compiles native Rust to WebAssembly without emulation layers and handles exceptions by degrading to blank frames rather than crashing. It has passed more than 215,000 Web Platform Tests and continues to add tests weekly.

Benchmark results indicate Kitesurf consumes three to seven times less CPU and memory for tasks such as screenshots and HTML extraction, though wall time is about 1.7 to 1.8 times slower than Chromium. The browser currently renders pages including TodoMVC, Wikipedia, and the Cloudflare Blog, and can be accessed via the Browser Run CDP endpoint by specifying the browser=kitesurf parameter. Limitations include lack of video playback, WebGL support, and long‑duration authenticated sessions.

The service is offered free during beta with per‑account usage limits, and a public playground provides Chrome DevTools integration for testing.
