Four M1A2T Abrams main battle tanks and six Clouded Leopard 8×8 infantry fighting vehicles were positioned at Taoyuan International Airport as part of the Han Kuang 42 exercise on August 7, 2026, to rehearse defense against an airborne assault on Taiwan’s primary gateway.

The annual Han Kuang exercise, organized by Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense, simulates scenarios in which the People’s Liberation Army attempts to seize critical infrastructure, such as Taoyuan Airport, to enable rapid reinforcement and logistics. The airport has been identified in Chinese invasion planning as a strategic objective because of its proximity to Taipei.

The 584th Armored Brigade, comprising the four M1A2T tanks and six Clouded Leopard variants, established firing positions while engineering units erected temporary obstacles using steel “hedgehog” anti‑vehicle barriers, cargo containers and airport‑provided vehicles.

The obstacles were intended to hinder the landing of enemy aircraft, airborne troops and special operations forces, and to protect the airfield from being used as an airbridge.

Commercial flights continued to operate normally throughout the drill, and the Taoyuan Airport Fire Department conducted water spray operations to simulate decontamination and firefighting after a chemical incident.

Medical personnel practiced battlefield trauma procedures and evacuation of simulated casualties, while engineers prepared a demolition plan to destroy runways and other infrastructure if the airport could not be held.

The scenario mirrors the 2022 capture of Hostomel Airport during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, where airborne forces initially seized the airfield but faced heavy resistance that limited its operational use. Taiwan has received all 108 M1A2T tanks ordered from the United States, with the first shipment arriving in December 2024 and the final deliveries completed in April 2026, according to the Ministry of National Defense.

Although the Abrams is a heavy platform, Taiwan’s military says it is essential for defending key objectives in urban and airport environments, and it is supported by a layered defense that includes Apache attack helicopters, long‑range artillery, missile batteries and drone systems.

The exercise demonstrates Taiwan’s ongoing effort to integrate civil and military resources in the protection of critical infrastructure, a priority amid repeated Chinese statements that it may seek to seize the island by force.
