Full article

APOD's August 10, 2026 image displays three pairs of galaxies. The top pair consists of galaxies that appear not to be currently interacting; NGC 4650A is a polar ring galaxy that may have formed from a previous collision. The middle pair, featuring the spiral galaxy NGC 4622A with a central bar, shows no clear signs of interaction despite their proximity. The bottom pair, NGC 4622A and NGC 4622B, are actively interacting and may merge into a single galaxy within roughly a billion years. All three pairs are likely members of the Centaurus Galaxy Cluster. The image was credited to Rafael Sampaio and edited by Robert Nemiroff, Jerry Bonnell, Cecilia Chirenti, and Keighley Rockcliffe, a service of ASD at NASA/GSFC, NASA Science Activation and Michigan Tech University.
