Brazil’s central bank will require virtual asset service providers to place precautionary holds of up to 24 hours on crypto transfers exceeding $10,000 to foreign platforms or self‑custody wallets, effective Jan. 1, 2027. The rule applies to transactions made in a single day or a single transaction and must be communicated to customers, with providers keeping records of fraud incidents, attempted fraud and corrective actions. Providers may release a transfer before the hold expires if they meet the central bank’s risk‑management criteria. The measure expands Brazil’s anti‑fraud efforts and follows similar steps taken by other jurisdictions, such as Japan’s request that exchanges limit withdrawals and require preregistration of withdrawal addresses. European regulators have warned that scammers are impersonating watchdogs and crypto firms after the EU’s Markets in Crypto‑Assets licensing deadline, citing cases of fake websites and documents using the European Securities and Markets Authority’s identity.
