At a candidate forum in Crawfordville on Aug. 4, Brice Barnes, a Democratic candidate for the open North Florida congressional seat, asserted that she built Independence Landing, an affordable housing community for adults with disabilities, and secured more than $30 million in combined federal and state funding by working with the Biden administration and state legislators. The forum, hosted by The Wakulla Sun, featured four Democrats and five Republicans answering questions before a local audience.

A lawyer for the Independence Landing Board of Directors sent a letter on Aug. 9, stating that Barnes’ statements misrepresented the project’s funding and governance. The letter listed three claims: that she built the community, that she obtained $30 million in funding, and that she sourced HUD money. Barnes responded in writing that she never intended “built” to mean sole conception or construction, noting that leaders often describe themselves as having helped build an organization when they play a substantial role. She also said every legislative appropriation for the community was signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Independence Landing broke ground in April 2022 and opened in September 2023 with 60 units, receiving Florida Housing Finance Corporation funding in 2020. Barnes served on the board from 2018 to April 2026, holding roles as vice president, chair and president. She faces Yen Bailey, Amanda Green and Nic Zateslo in the Democratic primary, with State Sen. Shevrin Jones and labor groups endorsing her. She has requested the board identify the specific language it deems inaccurate and provide financing records, and she has said she will correct any statements shown to be false.
