Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei responded to criticism that his warnings about artificial intelligence have contributed to a public backlash, saying the problem is fundamentally a crisis of trust rather than his messaging.
Investor Gavin Baker, who spoke on the All‑In podcast and on X, argued that Amodei’s cautionary statements have helped fuel skepticism in the United States, particularly toward data centers, and urged the CEO to adopt a more positive stance given his role at a leading AI company.
Amodei said his writing balances risks and benefits, noting his essay “Machines of Loving Grace” was motivated by a desire to present a more inspiring vision of AI’s potential. He acknowledged that public opinion of AI is negative and agreed that the issue is significant, but he rejected the idea that his or other executives’ warnings are the primary cause. Instead, he described the backlash as part of a longer‑standing distrust of companies, governments, and the tech industry.
He also rejected the view that regulation inevitably leads to regulatory capture and concentration of power, arguing that well‑designed rules can address safety, alignment, and power concerns while preserving openness for smaller firms and open‑weight models. Amodei said Anthropic’s policy proposals are intended to slow the development of frontier AI systems without hindering innovation, aiming to protect against cyber, biological, and alignment risks while allowing broader access.
The industry is watching how these policy discussions unfold and how they may shape future regulation and public perception of artificial intelligence.
