Clamiga, a Common Lisp implementation, supports classic AmigaOS 3 on 68k CPUs, MorphOS on PowerPC, and also runs on macOS and Linux.
Common Lisp, standardized in 1994, remains in use for industry and research. Existing implementations such as SBCL, CCL, CLISP, and commercial products lack native support for the Amiga architecture. Clamiga addresses this gap by providing a self‑contained bytecode virtual machine with a portable C core.
The system uses 32‑bit tagged values and a compacting mark‑and‑sweep garbage collector that can slide‑compact the heap. Bytecode is architecture‑agnostic, allowing the same FASL files to run on 68k and PowerPC. On 68k Amiga builds the JIT translates bytecode to native m68k machine code at load time, achieving speedups of up to 20× in benchmark tests. The JIT is optional; the portable VM runs on macOS and Linux without it.
Heap size can be set at launch; default configurations range from 1 MB for simple programs to 24 MB for Quicklisp usage. Packed byte vectors and bulk I/O reduce memory pressure and improve loading speed. Precompiled standard library FASLs cut cold boot time from about 92 seconds to 9 seconds on low‑end hardware.
Clamiga includes compatibility shims that enable loading many Quicklisp libraries via feature branches, though some libraries may require additional resources. Supported libraries include alexandria, fiveam, FSet, str, Drakma, and Hunchentoot, with SSL support pending.
Bindings for Intuition, Graphics, and GadTools are loaded on demand. An inspector and debugger are integrated, allowing inspection of variables, backtraces, and restarts. A disassembler is provided for both bytecode and JIT‑generated m68k assembly.
The project is hosted on GitHub and is considered stable for its current scope. Ongoing work includes expanding AmigaOS API coverage, adding a PPC JIT, improving the inspector and debugger, and increasing ANSI compliance. Users are encouraged to report issues and request features.
Clamiga aims to bring a library‑capable Common Lisp environment to hardware that has been without such support.
