An Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has recorded 2,325 deaths, surpassing the 2,299 deaths from the 2018‑2020 outbreak and becoming the deadliest in the country's history, according to the National Public Health Institute. Health officials report 4,945 confirmed infections, including 101 new cases in the past 24 hours, and the outbreak is spreading across six provinces. The current outbreak, the 17th in the DRC, began on May 15 and has accelerated due to weak health infrastructure, the region's remoteness, and ongoing conflict near the borders with South Sudan, Uganda and Rwanda. Tom Fletcher, the United Nations humanitarian chief, said speed, scale and solidarity are needed before the virus outpaces response efforts. World Health Organization Director‑General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that the outbreak is on track to exceed the size of the 2014‑2016 West African epidemic, which killed more than 11,000 people. The disease is caused by the Bundibugyo species of Ebola virus, which has no approved vaccines or treatments. The case fatality ratio has risen from about 20 percent in early June to 46 percent, according to government data. Public health specialist Thomas Parisch of Doctors Without Borders noted that many cases are identified after patients die in the community, reducing treatment effectiveness. Experimental vaccines and therapies are being evaluated, but evidence remains limited to animal studies. The outbreak continues to grow, and health authorities have not yet determined whether existing treatments can protect patients.
