Apple’s iOS 18, released in September 2024, introduces a native feature that lets users change the color appearance of iPhone app icons. Since the introduction of widgets in iOS 14, Apple has progressively expanded visual customization options, while earlier versions required jailbreaking to modify app colors. To enable the setting, users press and hold an empty area on the Home Screen, tap Edit, select Customize, and choose a theme — Automatic, Dark, Light, or Tinted — along with icon size. The Tinted option applies a single color to all apps, affecting both first‑party and third‑party icons, though some third‑party apps may need updates to support the tinted mode. Users can also use the eyedropper tool to pick a wallpaper color for the tinted theme, and the Automatic option adapts the appearance based on the time of day. The update is part of a broader iOS 18 release that also revises the flashlight, Control Center, Settings, and Passwords apps, but Apple has not announced additional app‑specific customization features.
