OpenAI disbanded its preparedness team at the end of last month, shifting its risk assessment duties to other divisions.
The preparedness team had been tasked with evaluating whether AI models posed serious risks and developing mitigation measures. Its responsibilities were redistributed among units focused on bio, cyber and other areas.
The change follows a series of restructuring moves at OpenAI as it prepares for a likely initial public offering. In recent years the company has dissolved its AGI readiness and superalignment teams. Ethics lead Chloé Bakalar, chief futurist Josh Achiam and safety chief Johannes Heidecke have all left recently. Jan Leike, who resigned from OpenAI in 2024, told the Financial Times that the firm is focusing on “shiny products” rather than safety.
Dylan Scandinaro, who joined the preparedness team from Anthropic in February, will now concentrate on the implications of recursive self‑improving AI.
