Apple announced support for storing driver’s license in Apple Wallet at WWDC 2021.
Apple announced support for storing driver’s license in Apple Wallet at WWDC 2021. The feature is currently available in 14 U.S. states and Puerto Rico, and is expected to expand to Kentucky, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia, Connecticut, and Mississippi, with launch dates pending. Kentucky plans to launch in summer 2026. North Carolina expects rollout in early 2027. Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia are in development with launch dates to be determined. Connecticut and Mississippi have been mentioned by Apple previously, but current status is unclear.
The Secure Technology Alliance monitors state legislation and studies related to mobile driver’s license adoption. Several additional states are exploring digital ID options, though Apple has not confirmed support. Indiana, Vermont, New Jersey, Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri, Nevada, and Wyoming are studying or pursuing legislation for mobile ID but have not been referenced by Apple.
Apple also introduced a digital ID feature based on the U.S. passport, which is usable at more than 250 TSA checkpoints. The expansion of driver’s license support remains incremental, and Apple has not disclosed a comprehensive rollout schedule.
