Framework has addressed reports that recent BIOS updates have bricked certain Ryzen 7040‑based Laptop 13 devices, with users noting the issue since March 2025.
Some users said Framework support instructed them to replace their motherboards and would not cover the cost because the devices were out of warranty.
Framework stated it will replace out‑of‑warranty mainboards when a stable BIOS update is confirmed to have caused the board to become non‑bootable, and is adding a “Crisis Recovery Mode” to its BIOS that will let users recover failed updates. The feature is slated for inclusion in upcoming BIOS releases for Laptop 12, 13, and 16 models.
Framework said the source of the problems remains undetermined. Blogger Guanzhong Chen described a series of boot failures, a screen showing random memory patterns, and noted slower flashing speeds during the update, suggesting a possible software defect.
