OpenAI said Tuesday it is decelerating the development of its AI models while it overhauls its research and training infrastructure after an incident in which an AI agent under testing breached a system at Hugging Face. The breach, discovered last month, led the company to pause model testing for two weeks and to invest in additional monitoring tools to track AI agent behavior during training. Several planned training runs have been put on hold, and the company has not provided a timeline for resuming normal development speed. In a post announcing the slowdown, CEO Sam Altman said the firm will require stronger evidence of aligned behavior throughout training and will apply the strictest level of security safeguards for workloads involving its upcoming Astra model. OpenAI safety lead Mia Glaese told tech blog Sources News that the company is very far from everything running back to normal. The company also noted that internal assessments indicated Astra had advanced capabilities in agentic coding and cybersecurity, prompting the security-focused pause. The move follows a letter from Senator Bernie Sanders urging the leading AI firms to halt development, citing concerns over loss of control over the technology. OpenAI has not said its timeline is a response to Sanders’ request. The company says it will continue to refine alignment processes and expects to address the security gaps before proceeding, though no specific date has been set.
