Uber and Pony.ai began offering autonomous rides in Zagreb, Croatia, on August 19.
The service uses Pony.ai's autonomous driving technology and is operated by Croatian startup Verne, which owns the fleet. Uber integrated the rides into its UberX and Comfort options through its app.
During the initial rollout, a licensed operator rides in the vehicle to monitor operations as the companies work toward full autonomy. Riders can request a self‑driving car via the Uber app, which displays vehicle details and instructions when a driverless vehicle is available. The partnership was announced in March, and the companies plan to expand the service to additional European cities.
The launch marks Uber's first step into fully autonomous passenger transport in Europe, though full driverless operation has not yet been achieved.
