HoverAir has stopped taking orders for its Versa modular drone in the United States three days after the Indiegogo campaign launched. The company said it will ship only the camera module, not the Flight Kit that enables drone functionality, because of remaining logistics issues.
On August 9 the FCC granted authorization for the camera component, but later determined that the device includes parts classified as drone equipment, which are subject to separate approval. The FCC entry for the Versa was removed from its database, indicating that the authorization was withdrawn.
US customers can no longer select the Flight Kit on the Indiegogo page, though the camera remains listed. Backers have reported that their pledges show shipping restrictions to US addresses. HoverAir did not respond to a request for comment, and it previously delayed delivery of the HoverAir Aqua camera after missing certification deadlines.
The episode underscores how FCC drone regulations can affect crowdfunding hardware projects, and it is not clear whether the company will issue refunds or adjust its plans.
