Micron announced on Thursday a plan to invest $10 billion over the next ten years to establish a research laboratory in Boise, Idaho, aimed at advancing memory, computing, packaging and semiconductor manufacturing technologies beyond current DRAM and NAND roadmaps. The facility, located near Micron’s existing global research center, will bring together Micron engineers, customers, government agencies, startups, universities and other partners to develop pre‑competitive intellectual property that could support technologies years into the future. The Boise lab is slated to break ground in 2027 and is expected to accommodate hundreds of researchers. Micron intends to create satellite laboratories worldwide and to link the Boise hub with its R&D operations in the United States, Europe, Japan, India, Singapore and Taiwan through a coordinated network. Sanjay Mehrotra, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Micron, said the investment “looks around the corner to the memory and compute systems the future will demand, bringing together the best minds across academia, government, startups and industry.” Jonathan Levin, president of Stanford University, said the lab “reflects the kind of long‑term investment in fundamental research and innovation that is needed to keep America at the forefront.” Jim Davis, president of the University of Texas at Austin, added that the commitment “is the kind of long‑term investment that will produce breakthroughs and unlock new opportunities for our students, researchers and industry partners.” The project represents one of the most substantial private commitments to semiconductor research in the United States and is intended to help maintain the country’s leadership in the sector. The timeline and specific outcomes remain subject to future development and funding decisions.
