Waymo announced a detailed view of its compute architecture for the Waymo Driver, including a custom 5nm ASIC, integrated hardware, and a software stack designed for deterministic, low‑latency performance. The system is intended to handle all driving functions without a human backup, requiring continuous processing within milliseconds. Having accumulated more than 200 million miles of fully autonomous driving, Waymo engineered the compute platform around three non‑negotiable requirements: responsiveness, ruggedness, and redundancy. The architecture minimizes end‑to‑end latency, enables operation under constant vibration, shock and temperature extremes, and provides dual independent processors that can assume each other's workload if a fault occurs. The custom ASIC delivers over 1,000 TOPS of machine‑learning performance dedicated to front‑end sensor processing. It extracts data from lidar, radar and cameras, performs temporal denoising, and feeds fused sensor information to inference engines that run neural networks with minimal latency. The heterogeneous system combines the ASIC with standard CPUs, GPUs and accelerators to balance workloads and preserve battery life while maintaining trunk space and silent operation. Waymo has partnered with industry suppliers such as AMD, NVIDIA, TSMC, Samsung, Micron, Sandisk and Socionext to develop and manufacture the custom silicon and supporting components. The company said the collaboration enables efficient scaling of the compute platform for current and future autonomous‑driving applications. Waymo invited stakeholders to attend presentations at Hot Chips and to explore career opportunities at its careers portal. The company noted that demand for efficient, high‑performance compute will increase as the Waymo Driver expands to additional use cases.
