China said it continues to support diplomatic efforts to resolve U.S.-Iran tensions, ahead of a planned U.S. announcement targeting Iran’s economic partners.
The United States has used military strikes and a maritime blockade in the Middle East.
President Donald Trump warned that Iran and its trading partners could face further pressure.
China, which purchases most of Iran’s oil and was its second‑largest trading partner in 2025, has called for a negotiated solution.
On August 17, Vice Foreign Minister Miao Deyu met Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi at the Diaoyutai State Guest House in Beijing, according to a statement released on Sunday.
Miao said China is closely monitoring the Middle East and is committed to promoting peace talks.
Gharibabadi told Chinese officials that Iran is willing to resolve issues through diplomatic negotiations while defending its sovereignty and security interests.
He added that Iran appreciates China’s commitment to justice and fairness and looks forward to deeper cooperation with China.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not previously disclose the meeting and did not explain the week‑long delay in publishing the statement.
The announcement is scheduled for the day before U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveils a plan that aims to shift the conflict from limited strikes to full economic isolation of Iran’s partners.
Earlier this week, President Trump threatened Iran and its partners after months of limited success from military actions and a maritime blockade.
China responded that sanctions and pressure would not achieve a diplomatic resolution.
Iran said Trump’s threats were a diversion from its own economic difficulties.
Gharibabadi briefed Chinese officials on recent Gulf developments and presented Iran’s position.
The statement noted that Iran will act firmly to protect its sovereignty and security interests.
