House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries met with Jared Kushner, former senior advisor to President Trump, in recent weeks to discuss possible cooperation on housing, immigration and affordability.
The meeting was first reported by The New York Times and occurred as Democrats prepare for the November midterms, during which they could regain control of the House and Jeffries could become speaker.
Jeffries did not confirm the meeting in a statement to the Times but said Democrats would need to work with Republicans to pass legislation. Kushner, who has business ties to Gulf states and has acted as an informal peace envoy in Iran, Gaza and Ukraine, has not held a formal government position. Critics on social media and in commentary called for Jeffries to subpoena Kushner if Democrats take the House, arguing that cooperation with figures linked to the Trump administration is inappropriate. Supporters of bipartisan outreach said any collaboration would require clear policy goals and accountability.
The possibility of a Democratic‑led House working with the Trump administration remains uncertain as the midterm elections approach.
