Michael Saylor stated on August 23 that Bitcoin functions as a form of digital energy that can be securely owned by individuals, companies and governments, noting that his firm Strategy holds 840,447 bitcoins, representing about 4% of the asset’s 21‑million maximum supply. The statement was made in a post on X and reflects Saylor’s longstanding analogy between money and stored energy. Strategy’s Bitcoin holdings were acquired at an average cost of $75,385 per coin, totaling $63.36 billion, and were valued at roughly $64.86 billion at the August 23 price of $77,175 per bitcoin. The company’s latest SEC filing listed the Bitcoin amount as of August 16, and the market value placed the position about $1.5 billion above its acquisition cost. Strategy’s cash reserve stood at $4.80 billion after raising $333.7 million by selling roughly 3.46 million MSTR shares the prior week. Of that capital, $132.2 million was used to repurchase 1.39 million shares of its preferred stock STRC, $52.4 million funded STRC dividends, and $149.1 million was added to its dollar reserve. Strategy sold 1,690 bitcoins for $108.6 million the previous week to finance the STRC repurchases and reported no bitcoin purchases or sales during the most recent week. Chief Executive Phong Le said Strategy intends to resume bitcoin accumulation once its preferred stock price recovers to its $100 stated amount, though no timetable or purchase plan has been disclosed.
