Rheinmetall and General Dynamics Land Systems have delivered the first prototypes of their XM30 Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle designs to the U.S. Army. The Army says the prototypes mark the beginning of a testing phase intended to replace the Bradley Fighting Vehicle.

The Army plans to acquire at least 108 XM30s through fiscal year 2031. The prototypes will be evaluated alongside early versions of the M1E3 Abrams tank at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California, during the spring. Both designs use hybrid‑electric propulsion, a remotely operated turret, a 50mm cannon, and can fire loitering munitions and anti‑tank guided missiles such as TOW and Javelin. The Army expects the selected vehicle to improve lethality, survivability, and maneuverability for armored brigade combat teams. Soldiers from the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division will operate the vehicles during the test rotation. The Army may keep both vendors in competition until a final selection is made, pending funding decisions. Earlier attempts to replace the Bradley, including the OMFV program, were canceled. The XM30 program is part of broader modernization efforts amid ongoing discussion about the role of heavy armored vehicles in future conflicts.
