Two blockchain security firms estimated that more than $766 million in digital assets were stolen across 55 incidents in September, making it the most financially damaging month for crypto breaches so far in 2026. PeckShield recorded $766.5 million in losses from 55 major exploits, while CertiK reported $768.4 million taken in 97 incidents, both showing increases from August. The largest single theft involved $388 million taken from exchange Bitget, followed by a $320 million breach of the Liquid Network. Additional hacks targeted services including Safe Wallet, DCENT and Duelbits, resulting in losses of $7.8 million, $6 million and $5.9 million respectively. More than $270 million of the stolen funds were later recovered, according to post‑incident reports. CertiK noted that September underscored how rapidly the threat environment can evolve, with its security dashboard documenting 656 security incidents throughout the year that collectively resulted in $2.68 billion in losses. The Bitget hack was traced to an August 31 zero‑day exploit, illustrating the link between delayed vulnerability disclosure and large‑scale theft. These events rank among the most substantial crypto thefts recorded this year.
