A public beta of StreetComplete for iOS is now available, offering early access to the app’s development progress. The project, originally built for Android using Kotlin, is being adapted to iOS through Kotlin Multiplatform and Compose Multiplatform, a framework designed to share UI code across platforms.
The rewrite aims to minimize platform-specific code by reusing the existing Kotlin logic and migrating UI components incrementally. Developers have separated platform-dependent elements from core application logic, replacing Android-specific dependencies with multiplatform alternatives. UI migration follows a staged approach: first converting Android XML layouts to Jetpack Compose, then adapting the codebase for Compose Multiplatform’s iOS implementation.
As of mid-2024, approximately half of the migration is complete. The transition requires contributions to finalize tasks outlined in the project’s Kanban board, including further UI refactoring and dependency updates. The team estimates a full port could take a year of dedicated work, though progress has accelerated with recent full-time development efforts.
Community involvement remains central to the project’s advancement. Contributors are invited to claim tasks from the board, assist with testing, or support maintenance work. Financial sponsorship is also an option, with funds directed toward increasing development capacity.
The public beta reflects a milestone in the app’s cross-platform evolution, though the scope of remaining work underscores the collaborative nature of its development.
